Vegetarianism - Indian Veg Bhelpoori House, Chapel Market

Growing up in a meat loving family, I always feel slightly out of my comfort zone when discussing vegetarianism. It’s not that I don’t like vegetables; I enjoy a good salad just as much as the next person, but I prefer it when they are accompanied by a large rump steak.
Meat filled diets are not environmentally friendly as they require a much higher input of resources in comparison to other foods. For example, it takes more than 2,400 gallons of water to produce 1 pound of meat, while growing 1 pound of wheat only requires 25 gallons. It is important to be aware of these implications so that we can make informed choices and value the energy and resources that have gone into producing our food.

The vegetarian café called “Indian Veg Bhelpoori House’ at Chapel Market near to Angel tube station is a great place to sample some meat-free delights, not just because it serves ‘All You Can Eat’ vegetarian curry for only £4.50 at lunchtime.
What makes this place particularly interesting, aside from its good value, are the facts and images across the walls that highlight the merits of vegetarianism and the issues associated with being a carnivore. The café doesn’t serve alcohol, but if you fancy a little tipple with your meal like myself, it is conveniently located next to a family-run off-licence selling a selection of beverages. However, the café itself has a good variety of soft drinks. The location is also near to Camden Passage, where an eclectic collection of intriguing shops can be found.

Scores:
Food: 6/10, the curries are tasty and filling, but some are a little bit bland in flavour.
Ambience: 7/10, its rather quiet, but there were some interesting people to talk to and the owner is very friendly.
Value for money: 9/10, you can literally eat as much as you want.
Would I go again: Yes.

I may have only dipped my toe in the water in terms of experiencing life as a vegetarian, but it has been very insightful. Although I am not converted to a life of munching on carrot sticks and lentil soup, food is all about sampling something different and I have definitely achieved that at the 'IndianVeg'.
